Mariane was five months pregnant when her husband, The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was kidnapped and brutally murdered by a militant Islamic fundamentalist group in Pakistan in 2002. Her world changed forever but determined not to be broken; Mariane wrote a memoir celebrating the values of humanism and dignity while offering a detailed account of the investigation led in Pakistan to rescue her husband. The book won international praise and has been adapted into a movie directed by Brad Pitt, in which Angelina Jolie plays the role of Mariane.

Mariane contributes to many publications such as The New York Times, The Sunday Times, the Conde Nast traveller, Self Magazine and others. She also works for broadcast media reporting and producing documentaries. She is currently writing her third book and working on a documentary on resilience. She has received numerous awards and honours for her work including the Women of the Year award, the Internews award for excellence in international reporting and the Prix "Vérité" for excellence in non-fiction writing.
