Since retiring from the Army, Lord Dannatt became a key advisor to the David Cameron defence team from 2009 until 2010 and was later nominated for a peerage, where he now sits as a crossbencher. Moreover, he held the esteemed position of Constable of the Tower of London until 2016. Lord Dannatt remained to be involved in various public activities and discussions related to the military and defence.
